On 18 April 2017, H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and H.E. Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry inaugurated Qatar's first water desalination plant at Ras Abu Fontas. The inauguration was attended by other Ministers and many dignitaries as well as representatives of the companies involved in the construction of the plant.
The total project cost of Ras Abu Fontas A3 worth QR 1.75 billion was awarded to the Mitsubishi Corporation and TTCL Public Company Limited from Thailand and completed the first water within 18.5 months and second water within 22 months. It was the first plant utilizing Reverse Osmosis with the capacity of supplying 36 million gallon per day (162,000 million litre per day). The TTCL company is a Thai-Japan joint-venture company registered in Thailand since 1985. It had earlier been awarded the contract to construct Ras Abu Fontas A2 water desalination plant which was completed satisfactorily in July 2015.
On this occasion, H.E. Mr. Soonthorn Chaiyindeepum also attended the inauguration to congratulate the success of this project.
