The Royal Thai Embassy in Doha organized a series of activities to promote collaboration on mangrove restoration and sustainable development between Thailand and Qatar

From 7 – 11 June 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha, in cooperation with Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), led a delegation of senior researchers from the Environmental Science Center at Qatar University, comprising Prof. Dr. Jassim Al-Khayat, and Prof. Dr. Vethamony Ponnumony, on an official visit to Thailand.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in fruitful discussions with Thai agencies, including representatives from TICA, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), Kasetsart University, the Royal Thai Navy, and the Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project under Royal Initiative. The discussions focused on exchanging knowledge and exploring potential areas of cooperation in mangrove conservation, restoration, and the development of sustainable ecotourism policies between Thailand and Qatar.

Overall, the project was highly successful, enabling both sides to exchange valuable insights on mangrove restoration protocols, marine resources conservation, and community-based ecotourism development, while also strengthening networks among relevant institutions. The delegation also visited the seedling nursery at the DMCR Mangrove Resource Management Center, in Phetchaburi Province, and the Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project under Royal Initiative. The delegation further explored approaches to integrating public and private sector participation in the conservation of sea turtles and marine animals at the Royal Thai Navy Sea Turtle Conservation Center in Chonburi Province.

This initiative builds upon the Royal Thai Embassy's ongoing efforts to showcase Thailand's expertise and best practices in Qatar, with the aim of expanding bilateral cooperation and laying an important foundation for tangible and mutually outcomes between the two countries. Furthermore, a Thai mangrove expert has been selected to serve as a consultant for a mangrove restoration project in Qatar, marking the first cooperation between Thailand and Qatar in the field of sustainable development.
